Scriptly — Terms of Service

The agreement between you and Mintybits when you use Scriptly — a free app whose notes never leave your device.

The short version

  • Scriptly is free. There is nothing to buy, no subscription, and no account to open.
  • What you write is yours. We claim no rights over your notes, and we never receive them.
  • Scripture is licensed, not ours to give away. You may read it in the app; you may not extract a translation from it.
  • It is given as it is. A free app written by a small team comes with no promises about uptime, and none about accuracy beyond our best effort.
  • You can leave whenever you like. Delete the app and these terms end with it.

1. Who this is between

Scriptly is made and published by Mintybits ("we", "us"). These terms are the agreement between you and us for your use of the Scriptly app on iPhone, iPad and Android. By installing or using Scriptly you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the app.

If you installed Scriptly from the App Store or Google Play, that store's own terms apply to the download as well. This agreement is between you and us, not with Apple or Google, and neither of them is responsible for the app or for answering you about it.

2. What you may do with Scriptly

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use Scriptly on devices you own or control, for as long as you keep to these terms. The app itself stays ours.

3. What you agree not to do

  • Take the app apart, decompile it, or try to derive its source, except where the law says you may despite this sentence.
  • Extract, copy or redistribute the Bible translations, study notes, audio or lexicon data in bulk, or use them to build another product.
  • Resell, rent or sublicense the app, or pass it off as your own.
  • Use the app to break the law, or to interfere with our servers or anyone else's use of them.

4. Your notes stay yours

Everything you write, draw and highlight in Scriptly belongs to you. We claim no licence over it and no ownership of it. We also have no copy of it: notes are kept in the app's own storage on your device. If you switch sync on, they may also be copied to a cloud account of your own — iCloud on iPhone and iPad, Google Drive on Android. That copy is between you and Apple or Google, under their terms, and we can neither see nor reach it.

Because we never hold your notes, we cannot restore them. Deleting the app deletes them. Keeping a backup is yours to do, and iCloud or your device's own backup is the way to do it.

5. Bible text, study notes and audio

Scripture is supplied by the publishers and licensors named in the app, and each translation's copyright notice is shown with its text. Study notes, audio recordings and original-language data are licensed to us on the same footing. Original-language texts and lexicons come from STEPBible (Tyndale House, Cambridge), CC BY 4.0.

You may read, listen to and quote this material as any reader would. You may not republish it, feed it to another application, or make a copy of a translation out of it. Where a translation's own licence is stricter than this paragraph, that licence wins.

6. Search and study features

Scriptly can answer a question asked in ordinary words rather than a chapter and verse. It is a way of finding a passage, not a source of doctrine: what it returns should be read in its own context, and we make no claim that it is complete or that it interprets anything correctly for you.

7. The anonymous community count

Scriptly can add your reading to an anonymous, community-wide count shown under "Around the world". It is on by default and can be turned off in Settings under "Community stats". What it does and does not send is set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.

8. Changes to the app

Scriptly is updated from time to time, and features may be added, changed or withdrawn. We will not knowingly remove something that would leave your existing notes unreadable, but we cannot promise that every feature lasts for ever.

9. Supporting Scriptly

The app is free. If you choose to support it through the link in the app, that payment is handled entirely by the provider on their own terms, it buys no feature and unlocks nothing, and it is a gift rather than a purchase. We cannot reverse it; their terms say what can be.

10. No warranty

Scriptly is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, that any passage, note, recording or search result is free of mistakes, or that it will run on every device. Nothing here takes away a right your local consumer law gives you and does not allow to be signed away.

11. Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost data, or for loss of profit or opportunity arising out of your use of Scriptly. Because the app is free, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you have paid us for it, which is nothing. Again, nothing here removes a right your local law does not permit to be removed.

12. Ending this agreement

You may end it at any time by deleting the app. We may end it if you break these terms. Sections 3, 4, 5, 10 and 11 survive the ending.

13. Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them. Continuing to use Scriptly after that means you accept the new version.

14. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the State of Ohio, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the state and federal courts sitting in Ohio have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. This does not deprive you of the protection of the consumer law of the country you live in.
