Scriptly — Privacy Policy
What Scriptly collects, what it doesn't, and where your notes actually live.
The short version
- There is no account. Scriptly never asks for your name, email, or phone number, and we have no way to work out who you are.
- Your handwritten notes stay on your device. They are never sent to us — we have no server that could hold them.
- No ads, and no third-party tracking. The only thing Scriptly reports is an anonymous, community-wide reading count — no advertising SDKs, no third-party analytics — and you can turn it off.
- Cloud sync is optional and off unless you use it. It copies your notes to your own private container — iCloud on iPhone and iPad, Google Drive on Android — which we cannot see or reach.
- We never sell or share your data. We don't have any to sell.
1. What we collect
Nothing that identifies you. Scriptly has no accounts, no sign-in, no advertising, and no third-party tracking. The one thing it collects is an anonymous reading count, described in section 5, which carries nothing that points back to you and which you can turn off. We do not build a profile of you, and we have nothing to sell.
2. What stays on your device
- Your handwritten notes. Every stroke you draw is stored in Scriptly's private storage on your device. It is never sent to us or to anyone else.
- Your settings — theme, page colour, paper style, margin side, pen colours and sizes, and the passage you last read.
- Downloaded Bible text, kept so chapters open instantly and work offline.
Deleting Scriptly deletes the local copy. We cannot recover your notes — we never have them.
3. Cloud sync (optional)
You may turn on sync, which copies your notes into a private container in a cloud account of your own so your devices share them: iCloud Drive on iPhone and iPad, Google Drive on Android. That is between you and Apple or Google: the notes go to your account, governed by Apple's privacy policy or Google's privacy policy, and we can neither see nor reach them.
Sync is off unless you use it, and you can see the files yourself — in Files → iCloud Drive → Scriptly on iPhone and iPad, or in Google Drive on Android. If you use it, your own copy stays in your account until you delete it there.
4. What leaves your device
Scriptly makes network requests for four things, and no others. Sync is not among them — when it is on, your notes go to a cloud account of your own, never to us.
| Request | Goes to | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| Bible text and original-language data | Our Bible service | Which passage and translation you asked for. It does not carry your name, your notes, or any identifier for you or your device. Our server keeps ordinary web-server logs, including the IP address the request came from, solely to keep the service running and to limit abuse. These are not used to identify you and are not combined with anything else. |
| App updates | u.expo.dev | A check for whether a newer version of the app is available. |
| The support link | Buy Me a Coffee | Nothing. If — and only if — you tap "Support Scriptly", your browser opens their site. Anything you do there is covered by their privacy policy, not ours. Scriptly sends them nothing about you. |
| Anonymous reading count | Our statistics service (Supabase) | Only when “Community stats” is on. Which chapter, translation and devotion you opened, when you first write on one, the language the app is set to, and a random identifier created on your device — see section 5. Never your notes, your highlights, or anything that identifies you. |
Scriptly never sends:
- Your handwritten notes, to anyone but your own iCloud, and only if you switch sync on
- Your name, email, phone number, or contacts — it never asks for them
- Your location
- An advertising identifier, or anything to an advertiser or data broker
5. Anonymous usage statistics
Scriptly can add your reading to an anonymous, community-wide count shown in the app under “Around the world”. When this is on, the app sends the following to our server: which chapter you opened (book and chapter number), which Bible translation you were reading, which devotion you opened, when you first write on a chapter or reading or add a note page, the language the app is set to, and a random identifier created on your device so that one person is not counted twice. Our server also records the country of the request, derived from your network address, and then discards the address.
Nothing else is sent: never the text of a verse, never your handwriting or highlights, never the contents of a note, and nothing that identifies you. The identifier is not linked to any account or to your Apple ID, and is not used to track you across other apps or websites.
This is on by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings under “Community stats”, which stops all reporting immediately. You can still view the community statistics with reporting turned off. The data is stored on Supabase infrastructure and used only to compute the aggregate figures shown in the app.
6. Children
Scriptly collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
7. Bible text
Scripture is supplied by the publishers and licensors named in the app, and each translation's copyright notice is shown with its text. Original-language texts and lexicons come from STEPBible (Tyndale House, Cambridge), CC BY 4.0.
8. Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
